Birdel F. Jackson, Ill is a 1968 Civil Engineering graduate of the University of Toledo with a Masters Degree in Construction Management from Georgia Tech earned in 1974. He was selected as the 1997 Engineer of the Year and awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies and Georgia Society of Professional Engineers. Mr. Jackson was selected by the University of Toledo, College of Engineering as the 2001 Civil Engineer of the year. He was elected to the Academy of Distinguished Engineering Graduates at Georgia Tech in 2002.
He is a registered Professional Engineer in Georgia and thirteen other states; a member of the Society of American Military Engineers, Consulting Engineers Council of Georgia - named 1997 Engineer of the Year, American Society of Civil Engineers, National Organization of Minority Architects, National Technical Association and National Society of Black Engineers.
Mr. Jackson's professional experience includes Engineering Design and Surveying for several municipal governments, design and construction of highways, bridges, wastewater facilities, military buildings and housing projects. He has supervised and scheduled more than $1 billion in projects. Notable projects include: The Northeast Corridor Rail Improvement Projects, Nuclear Waste Storage Project, Richard B. Russell Dam, NASA, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Atlanta Life Insurance Company, Three Rivers Water Quality Management Program, Fort Valley State College, Lockheed, Underground Atlanta Public Schools, Georgia Tech Master Plan, and the Olympic Natatorium, Dormitories, Rowing & Canoeing Venue, MARTA Subway System, Airport expansions at Nashville, Charlotte and Atlanta, Highways, Bridges and Wastewater Treatment Facilities.
Initiated into the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in November 1964, at the Xi Tau Chapter at Toledo University, he has remained an active and ardent member and participated in the establishment of Delta Kappa Chapter at Georgia Tech; Tau Chapter at Atlanta University; Beta Xi in Evansville, Indiana and Chi Gamma Gamma in Marietta, Georgia. His community service work involves mentoring programs with CHI GAMMA GAMMA Chapter of Omega Psi Phi; 100 Black Men of Atlanta; Aviation Career Enrichment (a program to encourage black youths in Aviation) and Engineering Rap Session Counselor at Frederick Douglass High School, Atlanta.
Mr. Jackson began his professional career in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with the American Bridge Division of U.S. Steel. His next job took him to Washington D.C. and the Bridge Division of the District of Columbia Highway Department. He moved to Atlanta where he was employed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He obtained his Professional Registration while in Graduate School at Georgia Tech. He then moved to Mt. Vernon, Indiana, where he served as Project Engineer responsible for construction of a Caustic Soda Plant and miscellaneous construction. General Electric provided the type experience necessary to begin a consulting career. He returned to Atlanta where he served as a regional manager, division director and vice president, before establishing his own firm, B&E Jackson & Associates, Inc. in 1982. He served as Vice President and established a regional office for a major black owned A/E firm.
Five years later, he purchased the Atlanta office of the firm and began his present and most successful entrepreneurial effort, as the firm's staff has grown from three to fifty-seven professionals.
